USA Basketball is reportedly expected to name Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra as its next head coach ahead of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
Spoelstra, 54, who had previously worked as an assistant, will reportedly succeed Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who initially worked as an assistant under former head coach Gregg Popovich at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and led the Americans to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"Just in: USA Basketball is expected to name Erik Spoelstra as the new head coach of the men's national team, sources tell ESPN. Spoelstra succeeds Steve Kerr for the next World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics after serving as a lead assistant on Team USA's 2024 gold medal squad," Charania wrote on his X account.
The decision to promote Spoelstra was made by Basketball Hall of Famer Grant Hill, who serves as Team USA's managing director. Hill reportedly set an internal infrastructure in which Spoeltra served as an assistant and eventual successor to Kerr, as Kerr did for Popovich. Spoelstra is a two-time NBA champion, having led the Heat to six total NBA Finals appearances and a 787-572 record, missing the playoffs only three times in 17 seasons.
USA Basketball has won gold at five consecutive Olympic games, beginning with the 2008 'Redeem Team,' which was part of the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class earlier this year.
