Volusia County, FL - A routine patrol in Volusia County turned into a shocking scene for deputies when they allegedly caught a 12-year-old boy behind the wheel of a car, racing against a 17-year-old on a residential street.
The incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon near Dahlia Road and West Parkway.
According to bodycam footage released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy pulled over a Toyota Corolla driven by the 17-year-old and a Nissan reportedly operated by the 12-year-old.
The video captures the deputy confronting the older teen first, then walking over to the second vehicle and placing the 12-year-old in handcuffs.
Inside the car driven by the younger boy, additional minors were seen as passengers, raising further concerns about the situation’s severity.
Moments later, parents of the two juveniles arrived at the scene.
The deputy explained the situation, stating both drivers would be arrested for allegedly racing one another in view of his marked patrol vehicle.
The bodycam footage also recorded the emotional reaction from the 17-year-old’s father, who expressed disbelief, stating his son was about to begin college.
The deputy replied, “Then he needs to get his head out of his [expletive],” emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the official charges, but both minors were taken into custody.
The Sheriff’s Office says the case remains under investigation.
